Who Should I Call After A Car Accident?

car accident

If you have been in a Denver Car Accident then you know how painful and frustrating it can be. Unfortunately, what you do directly after a car accident can make or break how your insurance responds to your claims. One small mistake can be the difference between a successful and failed personal injury claim.

After a car accident, you need to act quickly and properly. This includes a few major calls to make after a car accident. Before you make any calls, first make sure that both you and your vehicle are out of the way. Then check to see if anyone needs immediate medical attention.

Depending on the severity of the crash, there may be a different order to how you place your calls, especially if you have sustained serious injuries.  If you are able to operate a phone, then you should place the following calls as soon as possible after your accident.

911

Many states, including Colorado, require that you call 911 after an accident if the crash causes a certain amount of property damage or if anyone is injured.

Sometimes if you call 911, an officer will only respond if the following circumstances occur:

  • There are vehicles disabled due to damage
  • The accident involves a fatality or an injury requiring an ambulance

Despite this, it is always the best plan to call 911 after any car accident. This is mainly due to the fact that it is very easy to underestimate the damage of a crash. After calling 911, if the police do come to the crash scene, they will collect information, and help to create an accident report. This is important because it can be used in your injury claims.

If anyone is seriously injured or trapped in a vehicle, an ambulance and other first responders will be sent to the scene.

Your Doctor

Even if you don’t need to go to the emergency room directly after your car accident, you should still call your doctor. This is important because traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and back injuries can present themselves after a crash. If you happen to be waiting for the police, your car to be towed, or a ride after your accident, you will have a bit of time to call your doctor about coming in for a visit.

Family or friends

Since it may take a while for the police to come to the scene of the accident, you may want to communicate with your friends or family. Especially if someone was waiting for you to come and meet them, they might be concerned.

Contact a Denver Accident Attorney

After you know you are safe and have dealt with other things, you need to call a personal injury attorney. This should happen before calling your insurance company so they can walk you through that process. Working with an attorney will help you maximize your compensation, and give you a helping hand in a hard time.

Your insurance company

Finally, contact your insurance company. Let your attorney walk you through it, and make sure you discuss all of your options beforehand.
